Jul 29, 2014 at 12:19 | comment | added | Peter Raeves | I added two answers. Not sure who the winner is. Calimero was broadcasted in Italy in July 1963, but was not an anime at that time, but became an anime officially in 1974. While Astro boy was broadcasted outside of Japan two months later in the US in september 1963, which was a dub of the original Japanese anime released on new year's day 1963.

Jul 28, 2014 at 7:49 | comment | added | senshin | What counts as "worldwide"? I think this is a pretty good question, but there are large patches of the world where anime has virtually no penetration, so you'll probably have to compromise on the "worldwide" part.
Jul 27, 2014 at 21:36 | comment | added | Dimitri mx♦ | Extra: Friend of mine suggested it was Momotaro by Kitayama Seitaro. But can't find any sources to confirm this ;/

Jul 27, 2014 at 21:20 | comment | added | Dimitri mx♦ | @user1306322 The big shots I named are not only "popular" in the US. I remember Naruto being aired on TV where I live (Netherlands). Children in the neighborhood would talk about it pretty often. But I think International success might be a better phrasing for my question.
