Jun 7, 2015 at 21:02 comment added Torisuda @ToshinouKyouko Game of Thrones and Spartacus started on pay channels where there's a lot more freedom. The regular cable channels are also moving in this direction, but more slowly, and network TV is still fairly conservative as far as actually showing nudity, although they're much more free about discussing sexual topics than they used to be. I get the impression British TV is pretty similar to American TV when it comes to sex from my small exposure to Doctor Who, Torchwood, and Sherlock
Jun 7, 2015 at 8:39 comment added Wrzlprmft At least from a European (more particular, German) point of view, the US is overly sensitive to nudity (but also teenage sex). We consider many American nudity thingys ridiculous, such as Nipplegate or not being naked in front of your own children or parents beyond a certain age. However, Japanese culture is similarly distant at least regarding sex and relationships (perhaps less so regarding nudity). That being said, I find the degree of cliché and over-the-topness of the aspect in question in Anime en par with other aspects.
Jun 7, 2015 at 7:34 comment added Justin Olbrantz You might say GoT is the American live-action equivalent of an ecchi adventure anime.
Jun 7, 2015 at 7:28 comment added Justin Olbrantz Those are the exceptions that prove the rule, really :P I haven't seen Spartacus but GoT is by FAR the American show with the most sex and nudity I've ever seen. It's actually been criticized by the more traditional people in America for its gratuitous sex and violence.
Jun 7, 2015 at 7:14 comment added Toshinou Kyouko I dunno about overall prudishness in american tv - I've seen some Game of Thrones and Spartacus and everything is flopping around.
Jun 7, 2015 at 6:51 comment added Justin Olbrantz But as far as slut-shaming, many of the girls in ecchi series (the ones that pursue to protagonist in a sexually-aggressive way) would be classified as sluts in America even though they're virgins.
Jun 7, 2015 at 6:50 comment added Justin Olbrantz Torisuda did have a point: America is extremely prudish in regards to nudity, given that TV can get away with at least fragments of sex scenes. I have to wonder whether the latter is a matter of working around the censors, as opposed to the more formal former prohibition. Interestingly, while I don't know much in that regard, I have heard of British culture being very prudish.
