Jun 11, 2020 at 6:57 | comment | added | pyrocrasty | The "roasting pirates on a spit" was mentioned by Gatz during Bartolomeo's introduction at the Colosseum. Probably that and/or his teeth are responsible for the epithet "cannibal". I doubt he's actually a cannibal, since Gatz didn't mentioned it when listing his outrages (and it's hardly something that would be omitted).

Dec 11, 2018 at 21:08 | comment | added | Kiwizoom | My evidence is on the one piece wiki Trivia section - onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/Bartolomeo "Bartolomeo's epithet "Cannibal" is actually a pun. "Eating people" means to "mock them" in Japanese. In English, it's also a reference to the question "what's eating you?" when a person is annoyed."
Dec 11, 2018 at 2:10 | comment | added | VXD | -1 for the part, "His "the maneater" is a play on words in Japanese, similar to english's phrase "what's eating you" ie, he teases people a lot, he doesn't literally eat them. Though in japanese the phrase can mean either". The Japanese term 人食い literally means "a person, animal, etc. who eats human meat or attacks humans for such purpose". It is NOT a play on words.
