Rudy is always spouting random English words, but I can't think of an in-story reason why he would know them.

If you're unfamiliar with the phenomenon, Japanese people insert random English words into their speech to look and sound cool. It's somewhere between Wasei-eigo and Gairaigo.

It seems obvious in retrospect that it's to provide misdirection for his status as a People of the Land.

What in-story reasons are there for him to know these words?

  • Landers don't actually speak Japanese, the Real Time Speech Translation System thing translates for the Players, but there is a sort of delay. Leonardo mentions this to Kanami. It maybe a side effect of his character overemphasizing certain words that get caught up in weird ways, kind of like running a particular phrase thru a translation app server times, but instead of the meaning changes the emphasis and context change a bit. – кяαzєя Sep 14 at 8:42
