Is the anime 'Druaga no Tou: The Aegis of Uruk" an isekai, video game fantasy, or straight fantasy series?

The opening shows the characters in a modern day setting, which leads me to believe that this story could be the in-game story of a fantasy MMORPG and that's all we see of the characters; we never see them in the real world, only the game world.

Since this anime has been released, there have been several takes on video game anime, as well as the explosion of the isekai subgenre. In retrospect, I wonder if the creators actually meant for this anime to be more than just straight fantasy.

I'm currently rewatching the series, but when I watched it the first time, isekai and video game anime had not become popular, so I didn't know what to think of the opening.

  • It is based on an arcade game from back in 1980 of the same name, Tower of Druaga, so I kind of thinking about "fantasy-setting game adapted into anime" – Aki Tanaka Jun 19 at 9:24
