Team 7 was formed under the basis that the top student was paired with the bottom student, according to iruka-sensei, but naruto must have been scored on his performance in the battle against mizuki since that's why he earned his headband. If the exam was on cloning jutsu, how did naruto get the lowest score with hundreds of perfect shadow clones?

I have another issue with this episode, too. Later in the series, it is stated that the scroll would be useless to mizuki since it was encrypted so that only jonin could understand it, so how did naruto learn from it? I'm quite far into shippuden at this point so I have no idea what episode that was stated in, so please correct me if I misremembered.

Academically speaking, Naruto had a very bad success rate in previous exams. So on paper, Naruto passed the exam once with many failures. – Wondercricket Feb 2 at 0:42
  • @Wondercricket I agree that he was definitely the bottom student, but I realised I made a mistake, because iruka specifically said that sasuke had the best and Naruto had the worst score. In real life when you retake a test, you always receive the grade of your highest scoring attempt. – K.Lum Feb 2 at 9:30

Iruka was referring to overall performance, not just that one test, if I recall correctly. – Shaymin Gratitude Feb 3 at 3:43

Answer for your first questions is that Iruka was giving the score most likely based on his prior performance rather than against Mizuki.
