Jul 28, 2017 at 18:30 comment added Hosea From my experiences, there's culture that 'cool' kids sit next to the window seat among countries in East Asia. It could be that this culture is influenced by anime (reverse causality), but it's a good hypothesis that cool protagonists sit next to the window to reflect this culture. For example, if the student was bullied in the class, he will not be able to sit on those window seats.
Jan 7, 2017 at 6:42 comment added Bhaskar It is a way (probably easiest) to describe the character that he/she is bored. And I think it also has a feel-good moment for the viewers which is basically one of main objectives of most of the animes. If I remember correctly they talk about this in the first episode of Handa-kun.

Jul 1, 2016 at 23:34 comment added WGH @Bobson, most people are right-handed, so when windows is on the left, hand will not obstruct light when writing. Most classrooms in real world have windows on the left for this reason.

May 26, 2015 at 15:24 comment added Gorchestopher H It's definitely a plot device. There more interesting scenarios if the character has access to a window (sees what's going on outside), 3 neighbors, and isn't overly distracted by the teacher..

Jul 30, 2013 at 12:55 comment added Logan M This does seem to happen disproportionately often. Probably, it's just so that they can waste a few extra scenes with the protagonist looking out the window pensively or watching other characters doing outdoor activities, but there may be more to it than that.
